More of the Adventures of JACK PINE

JACK IS A MAN ON THE MOVE

Piloting a dugout in the treacherous backwaters of Kerala India.

JACK with the traditional Kerala dancers. JACK performed the Log Drivers Waltz to the Red River Reel.
Showing off to the tourists.

Staking a claim.......because that's what we do.

Part of being a Lumberjack is looking cool...even when it's 32 C outside. Please ignore the sandals, photoshop will take care of them later,

After a long day chopping a little R&R is well deserved...just look at that Lumberjack, as cool as blizzard back home.
Still having fun spotting JACK around India. I had no idea that Lumberjacks were such chick magnets?

Cheeky JACK

PINE Living the Life of Riley.

A rough and ready lumberjack is a chick magnet in India....who knew? JACK seems to have a small fan club already. Apparently if JACK were Muslim he could have up to seven wives......

Pine in Amsterdam.

JACK Spotted at the Rembrandt Plien

JACK PINE looking smug in Amsterdam..

I should have posted these two images ahead of the Taj....but I didn't. Amsterdam was great, I love that city. I think I have a dutch spirit or something. I had some fun getting comfortable with Jack before hitting India. Truth be told, you could dress like a monkey in Amsterdam and nobody would bat an eye, so it's the perfect place to go in drag. I went to the original Bulldog Coffeehouse on the edge of the red light district. I was there back in 1980 when the crazy dude in the Mickey Mouse hat and the painted teeth created the mural that still greets you as you walk up to the front door. I saw pictures of him in his hat on the wall just inside the front door. He's dead now. To bad I would have loved to reconnected with him.

JACK wrestling for a rifle with a Dutch soldier. JACK kicked his ass.
PINE acting cool in a Dutch alley.

The best way to see Amsterdam is by foot, grab a map and go out and get lost. The trams are awesome as well, a daily pass is cheap and very handy if you want to make a few miles in a day.

I hope to back in Amsterdam this summer for a friends 50th Birthday. He has rented a barge on one of the canals and plans on blowing the roof off end of July...hope to be there to help out. Axes come in real handy when shit is being blown up.

With love
JACK

Jack Does the Taj

JACK PINE GOES TO THE TAJ MAHAL

JACK HOLDS UP THE TAJ

Traveling as Jack Pine has been a hilarious experience so far. The Indian people seem to have embraced him, so many have offered him special prices for their wares.  Indian prices apparently. I've had many comments from the locals and other travelers, mostly about the red toque I'm wearing. "That's the tallest toque I've ever seen'' said the voice behind me in a packed elevator at Schipol  airport in Amsterdam. I had the toque in its extended form at the time. Not a surprise that the toque has come in very handy, it has evolved over many years and many heads. My friend Peter spotted me straight away when I arrived at the busy airport in Delhi. Then we hooked up with a friend of a friend from Australia, you guessed it, the toque was provided as the descriptor. No worries mate. I'm not going to blend in so why bother trying.

JACK IN FRONT OF TAJ MAHAL
!
So far the experience has been exciting and packed with everything you can imagine. India is truly an assault on the senses. JACK is jumping for joy!

JACK JUMPING FOR JOY

Having a great time........more soon.

Hugs

A little money riding on the Maple Leafs

I'm sitting in the KLM Lounge at Pearson Int, drinking Heineken and starring out into the fog. Snow, freezing rain, fog nothing seems able to push me off my track. I had a nice visit with dear friends in Toronto but the time has come to go overseas. Kathryn has checked into an Ashram in Rishikesh, north of Delhi. She will meet me in Delhi sometime on Feb 1st.I have two days to check out my old stomping grounds, Amsterdam. I'll definitely check out the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum also a few of the contemporary commercial galleries. When your self employed you are always on. I'm looking forward to a Trappist beer and what ever else comes along. I haven't been in Amsterdam since 1983, I bet things have changed. Toronto was a good thing for me art wise, doors are opening for me and I'm ready to step through them. I'm looking forward to sleeping in Kathryn's arms again, I think this is the longest we have been away from each other since we got married!

Walrus Gala Toronto

Encaustic work fetches $7500.00 at Walrus Gala

Blanket III

Last night I attended the Walrus Magazine 10 anniversary Gala in Toronto. Many familiar faces in the room, everybody you can imagine from the CBC..Gian Gomeshi, Stuart McLean  Amanda Lang ....Also many of Canadas top CEO's and board members. I was lucky enough to sit beside the charming writer/publisher/Canada Council board member Anna Porter. What an amazing event! Great food and wonderful entertainment. Last fall the Walrus approached me for a donation to their silent auction to which I obliged. I donated Blanket III to their cause which supports art and artists in Canada. The piece was offered in a silent auction and fetched $7500.00. Not to shabby!!

Next stop Amsterdam and then off to Delhi.

Jeff's works are sly love letters to Canada - quirky, capricious, frank, and thought provoking.
His dream-like images probe this country’s soul”

Charles Pachter

Article in Boulevard Magazines December issue.

My latest show, The Adventures of JACK PINE, has its roots in Canadian lore. Old canoe paddles, the hockey sweater, historical flags, and the blankets tell Canada’s rugged northern story in compelling colour and dimensions.

The title, JACK PINE, derived from the infamous Tom Thomson painting, is a national personification of how we view ourselves. More than just landscapes this work provides a different interpretation of Canada by presenting the viewer with images and cultural objects that have preconceived personal meaning. The work is underscored with a deep sense of social and historical commentary, with a light touch of iconoclastic humour thrown into the mix.

I have long been fascinated with Canadian history and culture. This thread can be traced back to my 1999 solo show in Toronto titled FIBRE OF A NATION that featured point blankets and hockey sweaters. This comes on the heals of a successful exhibition in Toronto this past summer called Due North.

Read about this amazing adventure - http://jeffmolloy.blogspot.ca/2012/06/prairie-winds.html

Mia Johnson of Preview Magazine describes me as a Canadian artist whose work “focuses on the cultural symbols of Canada.”

Gregory Scofield, one of Canada’s leading aboriginal writers describes my work as very powerful medicine that captures the spirit.”

Avid collector Shelagh Rogers had this to say..
Jeff Molloy's work has been capturing the spirit of Canada long before the rest of the world caught on during the Olympics. His paintings are pointed, often funny, and always make you think. He is one of this country's leading editorial artists. Jeff Molloy is one of the most original artists at work in Canada today”.
Shelagh Rogers, CBC Radio One

These life-sized encaustic ‘point blanket’ paintings signify far more than a warm covering to protect us from the cold. These blankets are the woolly essence of Canada. They hint of wood smoke and weary trappers, of exploration and exploitation, canoes and commerce, the history of a people and the making of a nation.

Watch for the article in the December Boulevard Magazine and listen for the interview with Sheryl MacKay on CBC's North by Northwest, December 1st!

Jeff Molloy - Mixed media painting and assemblage

Jeff Molloy is a farmer of art.He creates multidimensional,
multi sensory works that bring emotion to the people who experience them,
and energy to the spaces they inhabit.

About Me

My Photo

Jeff Molloy was born 1957 in Toronto, Ontario. He developed a keen interest in painting and sculpture at an early age. Molloy has always demonstrated a strong a sensitivity to materials. Jeff’s fascination with shape, colour and surface informs much of his work. He has a single-minded, passionate dedication to his practice, and integrity of vision that is rare. His appetite for life is voracious and infectious, and this too is palpable in his work.
